Harriet Jacobs: Incidents in a life of a slave girl

Basic instructions: Choose ONE (1) of the following questions to use as the basis for this formal writing assignment. Your final essay should be 3-4 pages in length and contain a well-articulated and argued thesis. You must use evidence from the autobiography to illustrate and argue your points. You are not being asked to do further research. The book itself will be your main source, but you may use the Foner textbook, lectures, and other primary documents assigned in class to provide context.

Style sheet:

Put your name and the course (History 111, Winter 2018) at the top of your first page.

Have a clearly stated thesis at the end of your introductory paragraph.

Include a title for your essay that reflects the argument of the paper.

Use formal language (no slang or contractions); no first person.

Proof-read.

Double space in 12 pt font.

Number all pages (except the first one).
Provide citations for all quotations and ideas of others (page number in parentheses is sufficient if you are using the Dover edition of the book. If citing from a different source or edition, put the full citation, including the page number, in a footnote).

Question
1. What survival strategies did slaves use? These strategies might be either coping mechanisms or resistance tactics. You should consider who used which tactic, when, why, and to what effect. Where did slaves learn these tactics? Which were collective and which were individual? What parts of the slave experience did slaves most often challenge or need refuge from? What do these strategies tell us about the institution of slavery in the 1820s and 1830s?
