Step 1: select one of the following gods: Aphrodite, Athena, Chaos, Eros, Gaia, Hades,
Hephaistos, Hera, Kronos, Mnemosyne, Ouranos, Rhea, Tartaros, Zeus, Poseidon.
Step 2: visit http://www.theoi.com and research the god you selected in step 1.
Step 3: based upon the research you conduct on http://www.theoi.com and your
reading of Hesiod’s Theogony, write a 3–5 page biography of the god you selected in
step 1.
In addition to the three steps outlined above, to receive a passing grade you
must do all of the following:
§ Use only the following sources: http://www.theoi.com (written as well as visual
material), Hesiod’s Theogony (translated by Richard S. Caldwell: the one I
required for the course), your own imagination, class lecture/discussion notes.
§ Include at least three direct quotes from Hesiod’s Theogony and three direct
quotes from theoi.com. Your minimum of three direct quotes from Hesiod’s
Theogony must come from the actual poem. In addition to this, however, you are
welcome to quote from the following supplementary material contained in
Hesiod’s Theogony: Richard S. Caldwell’s footnotes, Preface (pp. vii–viii),
Introduction (pp. 1–26), and Interpretation (pp. 87–104) as much as you wish.
§ Write a paper of at least 3 pages, double-spaced, font size 12.
§ All sources must be cited both in the text on a works cited page.
§ Use MLA format (we will discuss this further in class in advance of the due date).
§ Do not plagiarize – not only will plagiarism result in failure of the assignment, but
also, possibly, other negative academic consequences.
§ Type your name at the top of every page of your paper, including your works
cited page.
